Mother Arrested

Can you believe its happened again! This time a mother has been charged in Spain with leaving her young son on the beach for 12 hours to burn. The Mother 19, left her son to play in the hot sun and went to work. The boy was noticed by a street vendor who saw the boy covered in painful blisters. He was desperate for a drink. Its bad enough the mother leaves her 5 year old on a public beach, but no food, no water no sunscreen..............Not much you can comment with here. Police have charged her with abandonment & child neglect!

Father arrested over child Sunburn

Last weekend a Father in the USA, was arrested over his 3 year child having severe sunburn. Apparently the story goes, that he had custody of the child for the weekend, and spent the whole weekend doing outdoor activities. When Mum came to collect the child on the Sunday afternoon, the child was extremely sick and red as a lobster. She rushed the child to the emergency rooms, where it was found the child had massive blisters and 2nd degree burns. Suffice to say the Police & welfare department were brought in, and the Father was arrested for gross neglect etc. Unbelievable that someone can be so stupid, when is the message going to get out there, that YOU MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN ALL THE TIME. I beleive this Father needs to win an award as the biggest *!@% of the year. You all know my stand and passion on the wearing of sunscreen, so remember "Block the Sun, Not the Fun! (TM).

UV & Your Skin

|
Well here in S E Queensland, we can safely say that the
drought is over, our dam is spilling over 73 days worth of water a day into the
Nerang River, so this weekend the water restrictions have finally been lifted
and its back to washing cars etc. Its interesting in an earlier post I made
mention of the awful weather we were having, but how the UV ratings for each
day had been extreme, with levels of 13 - 15. It was interesting to see how
people are fooled into thinking they did not need any Sun Protection on these
days...... Just goes to show the process of education is still a huge part of
the solution.
Well maybe this picture will help, this is a Normal Picture of
what looks like a very healthy young lady, and then a photo of her taken with a
very special UV camera. You can see that with the special camera her skin is
showing significant Sun Damage. So you may look at your own reflection and think
how great you look, but really how do you look. We encourage everyone to visit
a Skin Cancer Clinic at least once every 12 months, and hey for us in Australia
its all bulked billed on Medicare, so no excuses. I am off for my regular check
so I will keep you updated. Just because we are in the industry does not mean
we are immune from the ravages of the Sun.........Remember: Block the Sun,
Not the Fun!

Solariums being Sued!!!!

Well further to my blog yesterday, the big news to hit the wires about an hour ago, is that 4 women appear to be suing 4 Solarium operators here on the Gold Coast. It appears from the news wires, that left with unsightly marks after using high output solariums. The News reports the women are aged between 19 & 20. It appears that 2 of the Operators have already closed down, and one has settled out of court. Interestingly our Premier Anna Bligh last october released a discussion paper regarding Solariums as she feels regulation is needed, especially after the horrific death of Anti Solarium campaigner Clare Oliver. This paper apparently goes before cabinet this month. Apparently Victoria is set to ban the use of Solariums to anyone under 16 from next month. So, does this sound like the death knell of Solariums, sadly I don't think so, but hopefully the message will get out there. But like I said yesterday there are very good alternatives if you just have to have a Tan. So be careful and remember.....Block the Sun, Not the Fun!!!!!

Solariums double Skin Cancer Risk

This news does not come as any surprise, however published today by a leading research scientist, identifies the need for stricter regulation in this field. The study shows that the rarest but deadliest for of Skin Cancer, increased by 22% if someone used a solarium just ONCE! Last year 9500 melanomas were diagnosed, and 1,100 people died of some form of Skin Cancer. Solariums emit stronger concentrated UVB rays, and most people do not apply any protective susncreen when using these solariums. Its hard to believe, but ask yourself would you visit Chernobyl nuclear site without wearing protective clothing........ I Don't think so!!! At the end of the day its about sensible choices, most people are starting to get the message about Sun Protection, but for some reason people who use solariums feel its a safer way to Tan. If these people are intent of having a Tan, then "Fake It", there are so many good spray tans around now, instead of slow roasting yourself on a Solarium. So......Block the Sun, Not the Fun!

Happy New Year

2008 is finally here, and boy has Australia seen a mixed bag of weather over the last 2 weeks, with massive 40 degree heat in the south, to Cyclones and Flooding in the South East. I think we can safely say that Climate Change is here. Queensland was again the hot spot for Holiday makers this Christmas, however they had to endure the worst weather we have experienced for some time, indeed Fraser Island was evacuated due to the Cyclonic conditions. But here's the rub, even though it was horrendous weather, the UV was hitting levels of 16, thats EXTREME. So, thats a reminder to most people that even though the sun is not out, you can still get burnt. So please remember, Sunscreen should be applied everyday, not just when you are going to the Beach. Just heard on the Weather Channel, that another Low Depression is forming off our coast again, so batten down the hatches, but remember your SunScreen. Block the Sun, Not the Fun!

Overseas Trip

Hi, Sorry I have not added to my blog, I have been overseas on a business trip and to be honest it was a mad time, with delayed flights and lost luggage. However the trip was a huge success and great news of upcoming projects and product launches will be posted soon. I was sent a very interesting article about Black Tea as a Sunscreen this week, now before you rush off and start rubbing yourself down with Tea Bags, let me tell you some facts. It has been claimed that Black Tea does in fact possess some Sun Protection qualities, however they it only absorbs some UVB, and offers no protection from UVA, it does contain antioxidants that help repair damaged skin, and indeed in tests it was shown to reduce the redness of exposed skin. But heres the rub (excuse the pun!) The Black Tea product was a thick black gel, not really the thing that you want to rub on your body, so don't expect to see Tetley Sunscreen anytime soon.

Welcome to UV SolarCare Blog

|
As you can see we have been busy updating our website, we still have a way to go, but the wait will be worth it. We have been extremely busy with the launch of our exciting Wiggles SunCare range, which is rolling out nationally; we are also pleased to say that we also will see the range being stocked in a major retailer in the USA in the coming months. So keep checking my blog for further news.
I will also be using my blog, to help educate about our harmful climate and how we best protect our skin, and also report on new technology, quirky and weird inventions. So to start my blog I read this very interesting article about coffee the other day, as a coffee lover I was intrigued by what was said.
DRINKING coffee and exercising may prevent skin cancer by killing off cells damaged by the sun's ultraviolet-B radiation, a new study says.
The coffee-exercise combination produced a "dramatic" four-fold difference in apoptosis – the programmed death of pre-cancerous cells – in laboratory mice that followed the regimen.
Researchers at New Jersey's Rutgers University compared UVB radiation effects on four groups of hairless mice. The first group drank caffeine (the human equivalent of one or two cups of coffee a day), the second were exercised on a running wheel, the third had caffeine and exercise, and the fourth had no caffeine or exercise.
Mice that only drank coffee showed a 95 per cent increase in UVB-induced apoptosis, and those that only exercised showed a 120 per cent increase. Those that drank and exercised showed an increase of almost 400 per cent.
Allan Conney, one of the study's authors, said the cause of the results was not clear – meaning that human trials in the near future were unlikely.
The study is published in the July 31 edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
So there you go, drinking coffee is not all bad. Maybe we should innovate the worlds first coffee sunscreen…..Now there’s an idea. |
